Are Parenting Classes a Waste of Time?

Being a new mom is very exciting however it’s also a bit scary isn’t it? There’s so much you have to learn to care for your new arrival. Family and friends can help you a little and there are also some good baby books you can buy, but there’s no hands on experience. So where do you turn for this information?

There are plenty of parenting classes available today and you may be wondering if these are for you. What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking these classes? We’ll go in to these below and maybe make your decision a bit easier.

Your previous experience with babies may involve baby sitting or you may have looked after your friends’ children. Trust me when I tell you this doesn’t even give you a vague idea of what parenting involves. Caring for babies is an enormous responsibility and although it is very rewarding, you do need to know what you are doing to avoid common parenting problems. Parenting classes can supply this for you.

You will learn the basics of how to change a diaper, how to properly feed baby and how to put your baby down to sleep. You’ll receive hands on learning by practicing on dolls rather than just trying to learn from a book.

Are the classes affordable? Most parenting classes have a variety of prices and formats so there’s every chance you’ll find one that you can afford. There are also free classes in some cities so you may find them by checking your local paper. These free classes are usually provided by non profit groups.

Another bonus you may not have considered is the ability to meet other first time mums who are in the same situation as you. These types of classes are very popular so will meet all different types of people, some of whom may become your friends. If you’re a mom without family support, this could be very important for you.

Committing to a class schedule does demand some time. Most new mums work full time until shortly before the birth. Transport to and from classes may also be a problem for some moms. These are a couple of things to consider.

It will be well worth your time however, if you can, to experience these classes for yourself. You will quickly see the many ways that parenting classes will benefit you as a first time mom. Apart from all the help and information, you’ll be able to meet new friends. Most importantly, you’ll be able to tackle the job of motherhood with new found confidence!
