Is Your Baby Bedding Set Fatal?
It’s hard to imagine but according to studies 6000 babies die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome every year while 900 of these deaths are actually caused by soft baby bedding sets. Thus, you must ask yourself if your baby bedding is safe.
For infants soft baby nursery bedding may cause suffocation when head sinks into soft mattress during baby placed in her belly. Even though soft mattresses may seem like they are more comfortable, they can also prove to be much more dangerous. Fatal accidents may occur when a baby’s head is placed on a soft mattress. Infants are often too week to roll over if they get into a dangerous position.
Parents can prevent suffocation by ensuring that their baby has a firm mattress to sleep on. You can test this by pressing on the mattress to see if it may be too soft. A mattress with the strongest resistance is is best.
The crib is where babies should be safe, but too many times parents do not realize the danger they are in when they are in their cribs. Bumper pads are carelessly added in the crib without thinking that they may suffocate a baby if it will totally cover a baby’s face.
The parent should take more precaution and care to the infant because infant may be weak and vulnurable during this period. Although there are still some that say bumper pads are okay if you buy the firmer ones, the majority opinion is to remove them completely. There have been reports of suffocation with the baby pressed between the bumbers and another object in the crib, and also of strangulation by the strings of the bumper pads.
Research has shown that toxic gases, harmful to baby, are found in mattresses. Chemical compounds such as phosphouous and arsenic are being added to mattresses. They are used as fire retardants but can be very dangerous. These chemicals can react with others and release poisonous gases; if an infant breathes too much of these, he can die while sleeping in his crib.
Scientists later discovered that one of the reactants, helping to release the poisonous gas, is a fungus that commonly grows in baby bedding. Because of that, they suggest that mom and dads not use any older style bedding in the baby’s room that could have mold and/or mildew on it from being used prior. To insure that no fungus is present, parents should be sure to buy new bedding for each new infant. New bedding in a baby’s room is far more welcoming than recycled.
In addition, there is some concern about synthetic fabric in baby bedding sets. While there is no solid proof that synthetic fabrics are harmful to a baby, you may want to stick to natural fibers. There are plenty of stylish cotton crib bedding sets available (one of my favorites is the Maya baby bedding set by Trend Lab), so there is no need to sacrifice style for safety.
Taking into account all these different things, moms and dads should be able to decide if the baby’s bedding is safe. All the parents can sleep nicely in the night without any worries when they choose a safe bedding for their babies, if they did this their babies sound and a safe sleep.
