Baby Teething Powder

Teething can be quite a stressful period for both parent and child. And more so if the child is in a lot of discomfort, irritable and not sleeping through the night, parents will do almost anything to help ease the child's aches and pains. With is why a lot of people try out various home remedies, and if those don't work, most of us check out medical remedies such as gels and teething powders.

However, although these are sold over the counter, it is a good idea that you check with your pediatrician first before trying it out on your child. So here is some information on teething soothing powders to help you make an informed decision before purchase.

What is teething powder?

Teething relief powder is a powder that is applied on to the baby's gums using a clean finger. This powder is applied to soothe the discomfort caused due to aching gums. Initially teething relief powders contained mercury which is now considered harmful due to its toxic side effects. Opium was used in almost every teething relief powder in the past, and we all know how bad they are for us today. While most teething relief powders do not contain either opium or mercury, a lot of herbal concoctions still do contain a form of mercury in them.

Are they safe to administer to my child?

If you either don't know or are not able to find out the contents of your baby's teething relief powder, don't use it. Although teething relief medication can allow you as a parent a few hours of time in order to get your work done as well as some needed peace of mind, the question to ask yourself is whether the end result is worth it. When these powders were first used, children were actually poisoned by it. Today however, manufactures and pharmaceutical companies have only grown smarter, what may be a first class form of relief now may even give you cancer when you are older.

So before you apply any form of teething powder on to your child's gums, consult your doctor, research if it is safe to use, ultimately massaging your little one's gums with your finger may be the safest and most effective way to relieve toothing pains.
